Linux Distributions

  • Distrowatch: the site to visit to decide upon your next (or first) distro
  • CentOS: the community supported version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Debian GNU/Linux: the original apt-based distribution, and the parent of the ubuntu distribution
    • Debian Live: now you can testdrive Debian on a live CD
  • Fedora: Red Hat's bleeding edge distro supported by the community
  • Gentoo: uses emerge package manager to build all packages from source
  • Knoppix: the original live CD distribution
  • Mandriva: rpm-based distro
  • OpenSUSE
  • Puppy Linux: live CD / USB stick distribution designed for use in multiple machines
  • Enterprise Linux from Oracle (requires registration)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux: with commercial support and the employer of several Surrey LUG members
  • Simply Mepis: based on Debian
  • Slackware: the original Linux distribution with a reputation for speed and reliability
  • Ubuntu GNU/Linux (official distributions) "Linux for Human Beings" but don't let that put you off:
    • Ubuntu: the primary ubuntu distribution, based on the gnome desktop environment
      • Ubuntu One: file synchronisation and sharing for Ubuntu
    • Kubuntu: an official ubuntu release, based on the kde desktop environment
    • Xubuntu: an official ubuntu release, based on the xfce desktop environment
    • Edubuntu: an official ubuntu release, based on the gnome desktop environment, with the addition of educational software and option of thin client server functionality
    • Mythbuntu: an official ubuntu release, based on the xubuntu desktop environment, customised for use as a myth tv media centre
  • Ubuntu GNU/Linux (un-official distributions):
    • gNewSense: the GNU approved version of Ubuntu with no non-free software, please check hardware compatibiity before installing
    • Linux Mint: popular respin of Ubuntu, if you prefer lime green to mud brown, this may be for you
